National Archives

A ceremonial institution can support archives, preservation, digitisation, and public memory. It cannot rewrite history or claim monopoly over the national record.

Purpose

What an archive function can do

Store, preserve, catalogue, and make accessible the records that matter to Nepal.

01

Digitisation

Protect manuscripts, photos, recordings, and documents from loss.

02

Public access

Make historical material available to researchers, schools, and citizens.

03

Memory

Preserve royal, republican, and community histories without privileging one alone.

Limits

What an archive must not do

An archive is for preservation and access. It cannot censor lawful material or claim state ownership over truth.

Allowed

  • Preserve records
  • Catalogue holdings
  • Publish research guides
  • Support digitisation grants

Not allowed

  • Delete or suppress lawful records
  • Rewrite official history
  • Control public archives by force
  • Use archive claims to justify political power
Public memoryArchives help a nation remember without turning memory into propaganda.
