Crown Prince Paras

Crown Prince Paras Bir Bikram Shah Dev

The eldest son of King Gyanendra and Queen Komal, and the last Crown Prince of Nepal.

Early life

Born into royalty, heir to the last throne

Paras Bir Bikram Shah Dev was born on 30 December 1971 in Kathmandu. As the son of Prince Gyanendra (before he became king), Paras was initially a prince but not in the direct line of succession while King Birendra and his children lived.

The royal massacre of 1 June 2001 changed everything. With King Birendra and Crown Prince Dipendra dead (Dipendra briefly on the throne while in a coma), Paras became the Crown Prince when his father was crowned king. He was present at the gathering on the night of the massacre but survived.

As Crown Prince

2001 – 2008: heir apparent

As Crown Prince from June 2001 to May 2008, Paras represented the royal family at national and international events. His tenure as Crown Prince coincided with Nepal's most turbulent political period — the Maoist insurgency, Jana Andolan II, and the ultimate abolition of the monarchy.

When Nepal was declared a republic on 28 May 2008, Paras became a private citizen along with his parents. He married Himani Rajya Laxmi Devi Shah and they have two sons: Prince Hridayendra Bir Bikram Shah and Prince Gyanendra Bir Bikram Shah (named after his grandfather).
